How the CUST admission merit is calculated
CUST builds its undergraduate merit list from three weighted components: Intermediate at 50%, the CUST admission test at 40% and Matric at 10%. Unlike the entry-test-dominated formulas at NUST or GIKI, half of a CUST applicant's merit is their Intermediate result, which makes it one of the more forgiving formulas for a strong school student who tests badly.
Each part is turned into its own percentage first, then weighted. Enter the real totals from your result cards rather than working out a percentage yourself. Boards mark out of different totals, and the division is ours to do.
CUST also sets a floor. Candidates need at least a 50% aggregate to be considered for admission. That is a cut-off applied after the sum, not part of it. The calculator will still show you a figure below 50. It just would not put you on the list.
The Formula
Component % = (Obtained ÷ Total) × 100Aggregate % = Σ (Component % × Weight) ÷ 100Weights: Intermediate 50 · Admission Test 40 · Matric 10Components are summed unrounded and rounded once at the end.
Worked Examples
Example 1: a typical CUST applicant
Admission test 65 out of 100, Intermediate 880 out of 1100, Matric 950 out of 1100.
| Test contribution (40%) | 65.00 × 0.40 = 26.00 |
|---|---|
| Intermediate percentage | (880 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 80.00% |
| Intermediate contribution (50%) | 80.00 × 0.50 = 40.00 |
| Matric percentage | (950 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 86.36% |
| Matric contribution (10%) | 86.36 × 0.10 = 8.64 |
Example 2: where CUST rewards a strong Intermediate
The same test and Matric, but Intermediate 990 out of 1100 instead of 880.
| New Intermediate percentage | (990 ÷ 1100) × 100 = 90.00% |
|---|---|
| New Intermediate contribution | 90.00 × 0.50 = 45.00 |
| Other components (unchanged) | 26.00 + 8.64 = 34.64 |
| Change in aggregate | 79.64 − 74.64 = +5.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum aggregate for CUST admission?
CUST states that candidates securing at least a 50% aggregate will be considered. That is a threshold, not a guarantee. Actual closing merit for a competitive programme sits well above it.
Which admission test does CUST use?
Its own admission test, sat on campus. Enter your obtained score against the paper's total; the calculator converts it to a percentage before applying the 40% weight.
Is it Intermediate Part-I or the full result?
CUST's published criteria name 'Intermediate' without restricting it to Part-I, so enter the result CUST holds for you. If you applied while awaiting your full result, confirm with the admission office which marks they will use.
My Intermediate result isn't out yet. Can I still use this?
Enter your expected marks against the full total to see the aggregate you are on track for, then update it when the real result lands. Leaving it blank contributes zero and understates your aggregate by up to 50 points.
What is the minimum eligibility for a BS at CUST?
At least 50% marks in Intermediate or equivalent, with Mathematics for the BS programmes that require it. That is separate from the merit calculation above.
Do the weightings change between programmes?
The 50/40/10 split is CUST's published criteria for undergraduate programmes generally. Always confirm against the admission notice for your specific programme and intake, since a university can revise weightings between cycles.
