How CUST GPA and CGPA are calculated

Capital University of Science & Technology grades relatively. Its Academic Regulations say so directly, stating that the university generally follows a relative grading scheme, and then set out what that scheme means in points. Your letter reflects where you stand in the class rather than a fixed percentage. That is why this calculator starts from the grade you were awarded.

The points themselves are the full eleven-grade HEC table: A (4.00), A- (3.67), B+ (3.33), B (3.00), B- (2.67), C+ (2.33), C (2.00), C- (1.67), D+ (1.33), D (1.00) and F (0.00). CUST is one of the few universities where the familiar table is exactly right. The grading behind it is still relative, so no marks-to-grade conversion is offered here.

Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA together with the running CGPA up to that semester, plus a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.

The Formula

SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semesters

An F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.

Worked Examples

Example 1: one semester's SGPA

A 15-credit-hour semester using CUST grade points.

Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00)3 × 4.00 = 12.00
Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.67)3 × 3.67 = 11.01
Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.33)3 × 3.33 = 9.99
Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00)3 × 3.00 = 9.00
Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.33)3 × 2.33 = 6.99
Total grade points12.00 + 11.01 + 9.99 + 9.00 + 6.99 = 48.99
Total credit hours3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
ResultSGPA = 48.99 ÷ 15 = 3.27

Example 2: climbing off a warning

A CGPA below 2.00 triggers a warning. With 45 credit hours completed at 1.85, what does the next 15 credit hours need to produce?

Current points1.85 × 45 = 83.25
Points needed for 2.00 over 60 CH2.00 × 60 = 120.00
Shortfall120.00 − 83.25 = 36.75
Required GPA36.75 ÷ 15 = 2.45
ResultA 2.45 semester clears the warning. That is about a C+ average across every course

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CUST grade relatively or absolutely?

Relatively, for regular coursework. CUST's Academic Regulations state that the university generally follows a relative grading scheme, and the points table is presented as what that scheme means on an absolute scale. The one documented exception is retake examinations, where a final letter grade is assigned according to the absolute grading scale defined in the LMS.

What is an FA grade at CUST?

It is not part of the graded scale. Alongside the letter grades, the CUST grading policy lists I for incomplete, W for withdrawn, P for pass, S for satisfactory, US for unsatisfactory, NC for non-credit, and a "( )" marker for a replaced grade. None of these carry grade points, so leave those courses out of the calculator.

What happens to an incomplete grade?

It becomes an F if you do not clear it. CUST allows an I grade with prior approval of the Head of Department when a student cannot complete course requirements for reasons beyond their control, but it must be converted to a final grade by the following semester or it is automatically recorded as an F.

When am I placed on probation?

An undergraduate whose CGPA falls below 2.00 is placed on warning status when results are declared. Two consecutive warnings put you on probation for the next semester, and failing to reach a 2.00 CGPA by the end of that semester means discontinuation from the programme.

Does an F count towards my CUST CGPA?

Yes, from both directions. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator, so it lowers the average twice over. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.

If I repeat a course, which grade counts?

The replacement. CUST marks a superseded attempt with the "( )" grade-replaced notation, so enter only the attempt that stands as your counted grade. Including both would double-count the credit hours and distort your CGPA.
